Metadata in asset library

1. Are the images used in the media library updated with their appropriate metadata by file or is that metadata all held in the assets.js file? I want to ensure the asset library which is exported has metadata that can be used elsewhere if necessary.
2. Is there a way to auto-pull metadata from existing images/videos when importing them to the media library?
The use case here is there is a separate database for creating media, and we don't want to replicate work inside of DominKnow.
I can create scripts to perform these tasks, but I was just wondering if there was something more compatible inside of DominKnow.

Being able to add and search custom metadata would be a huge help, especially once the asset library starts growing. Even a few extra tags can make finding the right content much faster. I’d definitely make use of a feature like this.
