Capture Feature Update Autumn 2024 (Capture version 2.0)

Target Release For WINDOWS Friday, Sept.27 >> Multiple hotspots for any step with branching pathways, a new Decision Step, auto-saving plus more control over your Capture lesson display highlight this feature release

Installing Capture 2.0

Capture 2.0 uses some new base technologies which means it can't be a standard update from 1.4 like previous versions of the Capture application. Instead, it requires a new installation.

When you run your currently-installed Capture application it will prompt you if you are able to download Capture 2.0, and you can then install it or get your IT team to install it.

If you do not see the prompt, you will need to contact your IT team to carry out the installation.

Capture File Compatibility

Any Capture lessons created in Capture 1.4 can be opened and edited in Capture 2.0, so there's no need to create new lessons.

Once a Capture 1.4 file is edited in Capture 2.0, though, it will only be editable in Capture 2.0 moving forward.

Multiple Hotspots for Steps

You can now add additional hotspots to any step and create branched or alternative pathways through a lesson.

This is really helpful when there is more than one way to do a task in a software tool.

The initial action captured when recording the lesson is now designated the Primary, and any additional actions are Secondary hotspots.

Secondary hotspots can take the learner:

  • To the next step, for simple cases where there are two options or choices that can both take the user to the same next screen or task
  • On a Branch to a new Scene, for cases where the secondary choice is a much different set of following steps or tasks
  • To an alternative Path, for cases where the secondary action is different for only a few steps but returns back to a step in the Primary sequence

This article has all the details on this new feature.

New Decision Step Option

Another new way to provide a branching-based experience is to use the new Decision Step.

The Decision Step takes the learner to different scenes, which you choose when setting the step up using the Edit Step feature under Step in the top menu.

The decision step shows the learner a panel with choices of where to go next, based on the scenes selected.

Test Instructions

A new field below the stage in the Capture application allows you to add test instructions for a step.

This text is shown to the learner when the lesson is run as in Test mode either as practice or as a scored question.

This is helpful in cases where you want to provide the exact information a learner must type for a Typed step, for example.

In fact, Test Instructions for Typed steps are generated automatically for you!

Text Preferences Template to Customize the Standard Display Settings of Text in Your Capture Lessons

A new Word doc-based template (JSON file) lets authors define the display styles and standardized text used in their Capture lessons.

For example, you can set your Capture lessons to always use "select" instead of the standard "click" when creating step text, and set the text name of what the learner is selecting to automatically display as bold and a specific color.

This is available under a new Text tab in the Capture Preferences (File >> Preferences), where you can download the template to edit in Word then upload it again to set it as your chosen template.

Autosaving

Capture files now automatically save on your local computer while you work.

They will be saved with a time-stamped default name initially, which you can update any time by doing a Save of the file.

Updated Text Editing

The text editing for Step, Details, Hint, Feedback, the new Test Instructions, Introductions, Summaries and Markers has been updated.

The editor is more robust and now also offers text color options as well as a Remove Formatting feature.

New options for Typed steps

Authors can now allow all typed info to be set to uppercase as a preference. This is a checkbox setting under a new Text tab in the Capture Preferences  (File >> Preferences).

And by default Capture will create Test Instructions for typed steps that show what the input should be.

Better Auto-Step Text for Lessons Recorded in Older Java-based Applications

We have improved the ability of Capture to help create more accurate auto-step text in applications using older versions of Java.

This is really helpful for creating lessons for older enterprise type applications.
