When you add a layout to a page, or add a page from layouts, you'll notice that there are placeholders where you can add your content.
Should you decide not to place content in a placeholder, you can always hide it from view as you author.
Note: Empty Placeholders are shown as having a height when authoring. When published or viewed in a preview the placeholders have no height and will take up no vertical space on the page.
