Multi-Lingual Projects: Enabling the learner to change languages

When you build a project that has all your language translations in one project, the language will auto-switch based on the user's browser settings, but in some cases the user may wish to switch to another language.

Theme Level Options

With the exception of No Nav theme options, all theme options include an option in the Theme Designer: Player Options to turn on and off the language selector in the Theme's navigation controls.

NOTE: Though the language selector is on by default, if your course only has one language the language selector will be hidden automatically.

Custom Options

For any theme you can add your own language selector by adding an action (Show Language Popup) to any desired trigger (Text, image, button, etc.)

The two common methods are:

  • When adding your trigger you can add specific buttons for a given language and only have those buttons show when that language is not selected. This option is good when you want the option to represent a certain language and you have a smaller number of options, e.g., multiple flags for each country.
  • Add text, icon or image and when selected it shows the selection tool.

In both cases, selecting the action will show a popup where the user can then pick the desired language from all the available languages.

Note: Don't forget about Master Pages Headers and Footers. It often makes sense to add the option to the header or footer so that it will appear on every page in your training or to add it to the Project Introduction.

Keep in mind these pages are reusable, so you can simply reuse them in all your projects and if you need to tweak it later, make one change and all projects will be updated.

Steps

Once you add the desired item to trigger the action, select the actions trigger and choose Player Controls -> See More -> Next

In the drop down, click the option and then type Show Language in dialgoue box. From the drop down select Show Language Popup and then click Apply
