Batch upload files or upload to the Company library quickly and easily

When you are working on a Project you’ll most often add media files as you work by using the Media Browser panel.

But you can also upload files from the Media Library interface.

There are some use cases for uploading from the Media Library interface, such as:

  • You want to upload a batch of media files for a Project at the start so they’re already available as you or your team work on Pages
  • You are an Administrator or Author with custom permissions and want to upload files to the Company Assets library in the Media Library

File Types Supported as Assets on dominKnow | ONE

Since the content you create in dominKnow | ONE will be web-based, the Media Library only supports file types that are standard for use in web or online delivery.

There are many media file types for images, audio and video files, but a number of these were created for use on a desk-top computer and can't be delivered or don't deliver well through web content.

For example, WMA audio files or WMV video files - these  file types were originally created to run on your local computer either in Windows Media Player or in other Microsoft products such as PowerPoint. These file types aren't supported by web browsers, so being able to add them to a dominKnow | ONE page wouldn't be helpful.

This article outlines the supported file types:

To start uploading to the Media Library, select Upload.

On the panel that opens you can choose the Library where you want to upload the file(s):

  • Current Project – Uploads the files to the Project that you are currently working in
  • Other Project – Allows you to browse to a different Project in the site and uploads the files to it
  • Company Assets – Uploads the files into the Company Assets library (permission to upload to the Company Assets library is limited to Administrators or custom Author roles)

Select a Library and select Next.

Company Assets

The Company assets library is a controlled-access Library. It is where companies will typically upload files that everyone making content should be able to use, such as marketing files like logos, etc. or collections of stock art.

Anyone making content can use these assets in their Projects, but only Administrators or Authors with custom Media Library permission can add or delete files in the Company library.

Assets in the Company library can be searched using the Company Assets filter. They are also included included when searching using the All Assets filter.

On the next panel you identify the type of file(s) you want to upload:

  • Assets – these are the images, videos, audio files, documents etc. that you use in your Project pages.
  • Source Files – You can choose to store, for example, PhotoShop PSD files for created images, or editable video sources or similar for media files used in your Projects. This way, these source files are available in dominKnow | ONE for future edits and not scattered across computer hard drives or server locations.
  • HTML Widgets – You can upload content created in any tool that can generate HTML-based files, for example an animation that has a main index.html page as well as a folder of assets files and use these HTML-based files on your Project pages. Since these are typically multiple-file packages they are stored together in a special area of the Media Library.

You can drag and drop individual files onto these Library cards or you can select a card and browse to find files to upload.

If you browse you can select multiple files to upload at once (using CTRL+select on Windows and Command+Select on Macs).

You can also upload a .zip file to the Assets type by either dragging and dropping the zip file or by browsing. This upload process unzips the compressed file and adds the media files as individual assets. It also shows a panel where you can add Properties details such as Description and Tags for each file in the uploaded zip.

Allow Oversized Images

By default, images that are taller or wider than 1200px are resized to 1200px in the largest dimension when uploaded to dominKnow | ONE (the aspect ratio is preserved).

Choosing the Allow Oversized Images setting overrides this resizing so you can upload large images for intentional design use as backgrounds on Sections or Pages, for example.

This is option is only available from the Media Library, and is not available in the Media Browser.

If you've uploaded one file, you'll see the Asset Properties panel where you can complete the Description and Tags for the file.

These are both important fields to complete. The Description helps other authors understand the file, and for images is also used as the default Alt Text. The tags help improve the file's search ability in the Media Library so other authors can more easily find the file to re-use it.

For audio files and video files you can also add a transcript and a closed captioning file. Both are important for meeting accessibility needs. Video files also allow you toast up a poster image (a placeholder image shown to the learner when the video isn't plying) as well as adding bookmarks for specific portions of the video.

If you upload multiple asset files (including in a zip) you'll see a summary panel listing the files that were successfully uploaded. Only file types supported as assets in dominKnow | ONE will be uploaded.

You can the select the Properties button for a file to add its description and Tags and other properties.

You can also select Delete to remove any files that may have been accidentally uploaded.

Select Done when complete.
