Software Simulation questions let you use a Capture file as part of a project test or take advantage of the additional options for Practice questions

When you add a Capture lesson to a content page, on the Options tab you can set it to behave as Show Me, Try Me, Guide View, Practice and Test. In all of these modes, the capture lesson is an activity on the page. Using Test mode, for example, doesn't connect to the test score in a SCORM package.

In addition to using a Capture lesson on a content page you can add a Software Simulation question to your project which allows you to use a Capture lesson as a scored test question or as a non-scored Practice question. In both cases, you can set the behavior of the Capture file as either Practice or Test.

Adding a Software Simulation Question to Your Project

If you want to use a Capture as a scored Test question or as a non-scored Practice question page, you can add a Software Simulation question to your project.

This lesson shows the steps for adding a Software Simulation question as a scored test Question.

Once you've added the Question page you can then add your Capture lesson in the available placeholder.

When you select the Capture element on the page and view the Options, you'll see the Test Me mode is selected and the Show Me, Try Me and Guide modes are not available.

The Test Me options to Show Hints is also available:

These same settings are available if you use the Software Simulation question page as a non-scored Practice question.

Turning the Show Hints option on or off gives you two available behaviors for the question.

With Show Hints not selected, the learner will recieve only one attempt at each step in the Capture simulation.

With Show Hints selected, the learner will recieve up to three attempts at each step in the Capture simulation.

These two behaviors are outlined in more detail below.

Capture Introduction and Summary Text

When you are editing a lesson in the Capture application you can set Default Introduction and Test Introduction text.

At the start of a Capture lesson in Test mode, the learner will be shown the Test Introduction if any was set, or alternately the Default Introduction if any was set:

The "i" icon at the bottom of the lesson allows the learner to veiw the Introduction text at any time.

If neither Test nor Default introduction text has been set, no text will be shown and the learner will see a Start button instead of a Continue button.

Summary Text

In Test mode the Capture lesson doesn't use Scene Summary text if any has been set when editing the Capture file.

Test with Hints - Behavior

In Test Mode with Show Hints turned on the learner has three attempts to respond correctly for each step.

On the first wrong selection for a step they are shown:

  • A default “Incorrect Attempt” message.
  • Any Feedback Text set for that step when editing the Capture file. (The panel area will be blank if no feedback text was set).

The menu on the left of the lesson shows three short lines, representing each available attempt for that step. The first line for the step will be shown in red.

On the second and third wrong selections for a step the learner is shown:

  • A default “Incorrect Attempt” message
  • Any Feedback Text set for that Step when editing the Capture file. (The panel area will be blank if no feedback text was set).
  • The Step Text as set when editing the Capture file.
  • A Hint button. If selected, the Hint button shows the target area for the required action on the screen capture as well as the Hint Text if any was set when editing the Capture file.

The second or third line for the step will be shown in red.

If the learner is still wrong after the third attempt for the step, the correct hotspot area and the Hint Text (if available) are shown as a hint on the screen capture. The learner has to select the hotspot to continue.

The Summary screen at the end of the Capture lesson shows the score for the question.

If Partial Scoring is selected in the Publishing Profile or on the Question Properties tab, then each wrong attempt on each separate step affects the learner’s score for the question. If Partial Scoring is off, then the learner will score either 0 or 100% (i.e., they must be perfect to receive 100%).

On the Summary Screen, the text shown is the feedback text as set on the Question tab for the Question page in dominKnow | ONE, under either the Feedback or Default feedback features.

Like any other Test Question page, the Question tab in dominKnow | ONE does not provide access to the Settings for a Practice question.

Test without Hints - Behavior

In Test Mode with Show Hints turned off the learner has only one attempt available for each step.

Whether they are right or wrong, the lesson advances to the next step. There are no step-level feedback panels shown.

The menu to the left of the lesson shows whether the learner was correct or incorrect on each step as they progress:

On the Summary screen at the end of the Capture lesson, they are shown the score.

If Partial Scoring is selected in the Publishing Profile or on the Question Properties tab, then each wrong step affects the learner’s score for the question. If Partial Scoring is off, then the learner will score either 0 or 100% (i.e., they must be perfect to receive 100%).

On the Summary Screen, the text shown is the feedback text as set on the Question tab for the Question page in dominKnow | ONE. Like any other Test Question page, the Question tab in dominKnow | ONE does not provide access to the Settings for a Practice question.

Capture lessons in a Practice Question

When you use a Software Simulation question page as a Practice Question, only Test Me mode and the Show Hints option are available (just as when the page is used as a Test question). The behaviors for Test Me mode with and without Hints are the same as described above.

Using a Software Simulation question page as a Practice Question provides access on the question tab to the settings for a Practice Question, such as Disable Next and Disable Previous:
