Two easy ways to make new-language versions of any Project

In dominKnow | ONE you can add translated languages into a single Project or create separate projects for each translated language.

For creating separate Projects for translated languages, dominKnow | ONE offers two different workflows:

  • A workflow for making an exact translation of the project with no need to make content changes or alterations before translating for the new language version.
  • A workflow if you need to make localization changes to the content before translating.

Duplicating and Exporting For an Exact Translation

Because this workflow makes the copied, second-language course uneditable until the translation document is imported, this process is ideal for projects that need to be translated without any content alterations.

The content in the master project and the second language project would be identical, aside from the language differences. (You can, of course, make changes to the second-language project once the translation document has been imported and the project is set to Active status.)

This workflow:

  • creates a copy of the first-language (master or parent) project
  • sets it to the desired second language, and
  • automatically exports the Excel or XML translation file containing all the text strings in the master project.

The copied project is set in Pending Translation status and cannot be edited. (You will not see the copied project in the Browse Projects lists when it is set to this status.)

Once the translation team completes its work, the author imports the translation Excel or XML file imported back into the dominKnow | ONE site using the Import Translation File option on the Translation panel.

This replaces all the original-language text with the text strings provided in the Excel or XML doc and automatically moves the project from Pending Translation status to Active status. It will now be available in the Browse Projects lists.

Steps to Duplicate and Export a Project For an Exact Translation

For this workflow, open the first-language Project for editing. 

Then follow the steps in this lesson. 

Remember: The copy of the Project created for the target language is put into a pending translation state. You won't find it on the Browse Projects panel until you import the completed translation file. The pending state ensures no changes are made to the target translation Project while it is being translated.

Duplicating and Exporting For Localization Changes Before Translation

This workflow:

  • creates a copy of the first-language (master) project
  • sets it to the desired second language, and 
  • opens the copied project for editing.

Authors can then make required content changes so it is relevant to the target audience for the second-language version – maybe some pages need to be deleted or added, for example.

Once that work is done, the author then exports the translation file using the Text Export options available on the Application Menu's Exports panel. 

 

Steps to Duplicate a Project For Localization Changes Before Translation

For this workflow, open the Browse Projects panel from any Project. 

Then follow the step in this lesson. 

Steps to Export the Translation File After Localization Changes Are Completed

Once your changes are completed, you can export the text translation file.

With the Project open:

  1. Select the Application Menu (1)
  2. Select Export (2)
  3. Select either Text as Excel or Text as XML (3)

When the export process is completed the file will download automatically for you.

Steps to Import the Translation File 

Once the second-language text has been added to the translation export file you can import the file to replace the first-language text with the new translation strings.

With any Project open:

  1. Select the Application Menu (1)
  2. Select Import (2)
  3. Select either Text from Excel or Text from XML (3)

NOTE: Since the import of the translated text replaces the first-language text, the second-language project will no longer maintain any memory or record of the original language text strings.
