Step 1

Select the Insert tab.

Step 2

Select Shapes.

Step 3

Under Draw a Shape, select the filled square.

Step 4

Select Ok.

Step 5

We're going to use the shape as a panel behind the left-side text element so we want the shape to be in the same area as the text element, just just a bit wider and taller.

To start adding the shape to the page, click on the page to set the top left corner of the shape and hold your mouse button down. Drag your mouse down and to the right.

Step 6

Release your mouse button where you want set the bottom right corner of the Shape.

Step 7

The Shape is now added to the Page. It is set to use the default Theme colors for its fill and outline.

After adding the Shape, its Options tab is shown on the Ribbon.

Select Fill.

Step 8

On the Pick a Fill panel, select a dark grey color.

Step 9

Select Outline.

Step 10

On the Pick an Outline panel, select the theme red color.

Step 11

The other default settings on the Options tab (rounded corners, no drop shadow and a solid outline of 2 pixels) meet the design needs of this lesson so we won't adjust them.

Select the Stage to close up the Pick an Outline panel.

Step 12

The Shape is shown on the Page.
