Two questions about the Flow Storytelling Template

Is there anyway to start the left menu closed?
In the title block in the left menu (screenshot below) is there any way to have the course image appear rather than the colour? I didn't find a native option for this, so I tried adding my own CSS. While inspecting the page, I've been able to hide the colour to show the image behind the colour, but when adding my own css to match when I inspected the page, it did not work (css below).
